The fractionated carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is a popular choice for the treatment of acne scars, skin laxity and general skin rejuvenation.
What is CO2 Laser Micro Peel?
The CO2 laser micro peel face revitalisation procedure is performed using a fractionated CO2 laser at a milder setting with the aim of providing general skin rejuvenation to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimising pore size and refining skin tone and texture.
The laser works by vaporising the topmost layer of the skin, creating numerous microscopic thermal injury zones in the deeper layer of the skin while sparing the surrounding tissue. It is during this healing process that the skin produces collagen and new skin cells are formed to replace the older damaged skin. Collagen helps skin maintain its elasticity and suppleness while the shedding of old damaged skin reveals new younger looking skin.
What is CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?
The CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing procedure is performed using a fractionated CO2 laser with the aim of treating acne scarring or providing an intensive general skin rejuvenation to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimising pore size and refining skin tone and texture.
The “Edge Pulse” technology of the CO2 laser machine delivers high energy in a very short span of time allowing for deep skin ablation in the form of vertical microscopic thermal injury zones while minimising damage to the outer layer. The “injury” triggers the self-healing mechanism of the skin, stimulating collagen production to help with smooth out old acne scars. Outer layers of the skin can also be removed with precision. The new skin cells that form during healing give the skin a tighter, younger looking appearance.
What the treatment involves:
The CO2 Laser procedure can be performed with minimal discomfort. Topical anaesthesia (numbing cream) will be applied and left on for 20 to 30 minutes prior to the start of the treatment. The treatment itself takes between 15 to 20 minutes. A cold compress will applied post treatment to sooth the skin and reduce any redness.
After the treatment:
The treated area may show signs of redness and swelling for several hours following the procedure. Small, pixilated scabs which may be invisible to the naked eye but feels rough to the touch will form on the surface of the skin. The skin will have a sun burnt look for 2 to 3 days while the scabs will slowly drop off within a week. Please do not pick at the scabs; allow the scabs to fall off naturally.
For the first 24 hours after your treatment, cleanse face with warm water only. Thereafter, cleansing the face twice daily with a nonabrasive non-comedogenic cleanser is recommended. Avoid using skin products with acidic content (AHA, BHA) for 1 week or until the scabs fall off. Moisturiser and sunscreen are highly recommended for at least the first 3 months. Light makeup can be worn within a day of the procedure.
