Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems which include Light Heat Energy (LHE) systems can be used for hair removal. These sources of light are different to laser beams in that they are less concentrated. They work in the same way as a laser beam when removing hair. Hair follicles are heated using the light pulses. This damages the hair follicle, which prevents the hair from growing again.
What the treatment involves:
Treatment takes between 15 and 60 minutes. Before the treatment, topical anesthesia (numbing cream) may be applied for about 30 to 60 minutes. Patient’s eyes will be protected with specially designed goggles. Patient may also experience some discomfort during the treatment. The number of treatments needed depends on the area to be treated, skin types and hair colours.
The light pulses only works on hair follicles which are actively growing at the time of the treatment. Hair will continue to grow from follicles which are not active at the time of the treatment. This means that a course of treatments may be needed before results can be seen.
After the treatment:
The treated area may be red and rashes may occur. However, they should resolve within the next 24 hours. The treated area may also be sensitive for a short period of time. Light-based hair removal treatments may cause skin blisters or burns. Generally, individuals with darker skin tone may benefit more from laser hair removal. Long term hair growth reduction can be achieved with IPL and LHE machines. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure and tanning 1 week before and after the treatment.
