How to Get the Best Results From Your HIFU Treatment

14 September, 2026

HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for lifting and firming the skin, and there is a lot you can do to make the most of it. Because HIFU works by stimulating your own collagen production, the results depend not only on the treatment itself but on how well your skin is supported in the weeks and months that follow. Here is how to get the best out of every session.

First, how HIFU works

HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy to precise depths beneath the skin, including the deeper dermis and the SMAS layer, the same connective tissue layer that surgeons tighten during a facelift. At each focal point, tissue is briefly heated to around 60 to 70°C, causing existing collagen fibres to contract and triggering the skin’s natural repair response. Over the following weeks, your body produces fresh collagen and elastin around each treated zone, all without breaking the skin surface.

Histological studies have confirmed increased dermal collagen after treatment, and clinical trials report visible improvement in brow, cheek and jawline position in the majority of patients, with results developing over three to six months.

The key point is this: HIFU starts the process, and your body completes it. That gives you a real opportunity to influence the outcome.

Before your treatment

A little preparation helps your skin respond well and keeps you comfortable on the day.

•       Come in for a proper assessment. The right depths, energy settings and treatment areas depend on your skin thickness, laxity and facial anatomy. A personalised plan is what makes the difference between a good result and an excellent one.

•       Protect your skin from the sun in the lead-up. Well-protected, calm skin is the ideal starting point.

•       Let your doctor know about recent treatments. Injectables, lasers or peels in the same area may affect timing, and your doctor can sequence everything for the best combined effect.

•       Stay well hydrated and have a proper meal beforehand. This helps with comfort during the session.

•       Plan your timing. Since results build over three to six months, book with that runway in mind if you have an occasion in view.

On the day

HIFU requires no downtime, and most people go straight back to their normal routine. You may notice mild redness or a slight warm, tingling sensation immediately afterwards. This settles quickly. Some patients see a subtle tightening straight away as existing collagen contracts, though the more meaningful change arrives later.

In the days after

The first week is about letting the skin’s repair process get underway smoothly.

•       Be diligent with sunscreen. UV exposure activates enzymes that break down collagen, so daily broad-spectrum protection safeguards exactly what you have just invested in.

•       Keep skincare gentle for a few days. A simple cleanser and moisturiser is ideal. Your doctor will advise when to resume actives such as retinoids or acids.

•       Skip intense heat for a short period. Saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga are best paused briefly.

•       Stay hydrated and sleep well. Collagen synthesis is an active repair process, and rest supports it.

Mild tenderness or a slight puffiness in the treated area is common and settles on its own within days.

Over the following months

This is where the real transformation happens, and patience pays off.

•       Expect gradual change. Most patients notice firmness improving from around week four to six, with the lift becoming clearly visible at three months and peaking at around three to six months. Comparison photos at each stage are genuinely satisfying.

•       Keep the fundamentals going. Daily sunscreen and a topical retinoid support collagen at the surface while HIFU works at depth. Retinoids have the strongest evidence of any topical for increasing dermal collagen, making them an excellent partner treatment.

•       Support your skin from within. Adequate protein and vitamin C intake provide the raw materials for collagen synthesis. Good sleep and not smoking both help meaningfully.

•       Consider a combination approach. Where volume loss is also a factor, hyaluronic acid fillers or collagen-stimulating injectables complement the lift beautifully. Lasers and skin boosters can refine tone and texture alongside it. Your doctor will advise what sequencing suits you.

Keeping your results

A single session typically provides improvement lasting around a year. Because collagen naturally continues to decline with age, maintenance treatments allow you to build on your results rather than start over. Many patients find that annual sessions keep their jawline defined and their mid-face lifted year after year, with each treatment adding to the foundation the last one built.
